Notes from the Road Issue 008

Welcome to Notes From the Road—an inside look at desert happenings, things we’re currently into, and anything/everything in between brought to you by one of our owners and founders, Janelle. We don’t gatekeep here in the high desert, so if we love it, you need to know about it.

Gone Fishin’

We are spending all of August giving our van some much-needed TLC before we head out on our annual camping trip. This year, we plan to dig into the Eastern Sierras. In the past, we have camped off of Hwy 395, on the way to the Pacific Northwest. I want to learn how to fish, so we’ve been watching NW Fishing Secrets’ catch-and-cook videos on YouTube. I hope I can catch a trout in an alpine lake and cook it up!

Hotel Wren

Our friends at Manola Studio recently opened a beautiful hotel in Twentyninepalms. Serene, relaxing, and soulful, Hotel Wren just exudes desert vibes. It’s desert-inspired without feeling too minimalist or neutral. It just feels right.  The renovated historic motor lodge rooms surround the courtyard pool with plenty of handmade details in every nook.

Wind Phone

Out in the desert, in Joshua Tree, there’s a phone to nowhere. Colin Campbell and Gail Lerner built the Wind Phone in memory of their children, Ruby and Hart, who were tragically killed by a drunk driver in Morongo Valley in 2019. It’s a place you can hike to and release whatever words weigh on your heart into the ether. Pick up the phone and speak to a lost loved one, or perhaps even a future version of yourself. The coordinates are 34°07’22.4” N, 116°15’58.8” W.
