Notes from the Road Issue 007

Welcome to Notes From the Road—an inside look at desert happenings, things we’re currently into, and anything/everything in between brought to you by one of our owners and founders, Janelle. We don’t gatekeep here in the high desert, so if we love it, you need to know about it.

A Visit to Mexico

We just got back from Chiapas, Mexico, where we visited the weaving workshop behind all of our tabletop linens. It was a beautiful trip—travel guide to come! So much incredible food and rain every day. Rain always feels like a gift, no matter where we are. In between meals and workshop visits, we managed to squeeze in some shopping and brought back a small collection of fun finds for the shop (Desert Market location only). Also: I finally got to use our leather passport case—only to learn that U.S. customs no longer checks passports. Just a (very creepy) facial recognition scan and we were back.

Desert Trumpet

Hi-desert locals: Are you following Desert Trumpet yet? It’s a relatively new Substack reporting on current events in 29 Palms, with plans to expand into other hi-des towns. We love their thoughtful coverage, and you can even subscribe to specific columns like Astronomy or Arts & Culture.

I Want to Believe

Don’t miss the 2nd Annual Area 29 Festival in 29 Palms this August! As if you really need another excuse to get weird in the desert. Nanu nanu.

Summer Rest

Summer in the desert is for slowing down. Business quiets to a trickle—something we try to prepare for, but it still catches us off guard. It always feels existential at first, until we remember this is just how it goes. Once that shift happens, I try to lean into the stillness. Lower my expectations. Watch too much bad TV. Seek out shady trees and nearby water to swim in. Rest is part of the cycle, too.
